Madrid – Valladolid line

Access to Valladolid

Among the actions included in the project is the remodeling of the station (both the tracks and the platforms) for its use with the two gauges: international and Iberian.

The objective of the first phase of this big project is to make possible a ground-level approach to the Valladolid Campo Grande station.

The trains that travel on the new Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid high-speed line will have access to the Valladolid Campo Grande station at the end of 2007.

The ground-level access will be provided temporarily until the completion of the last phase of the project, which includes underground access.

INSTALLATION OF THE THIRD TRACK

The new international-gauge track, called the third track, will be on the far left (Valladolid side) of the present double Madrid-Hendaye Iberian-gauge track.

To this end a double-track roadbed is constructed. One international-gauge track will be installed on it in the first phase.

The course of this third track runs from the Duero River through to El Pinar de Antequera and from this point to the Valladolid Campo Grande station.

The work will be carried out along a 10.5 km stretch.

First section (Laguna de Duero)

The roadbed begins at mileage point (m.p.) 238/000 of the present Madrid – Hendaye line, about 360 m. before the existing overpass in the municipal area of Laguna de Duero, through m.p. 240/000.

Second section (El Pinar de Antequera neighborhood)

Between m.p. 240/000 and 243/000, an area coinciding with the El Pinar de Antequera neighborhood, the international-gauge track will replace track 1 of the Iberian-gauge track, while the other will remain as is.

This decision was made in order to reconcile the transfer underground of the lines through El Pinar de Antequera with the presence of the current Iberian and international gauge tracks.

The portion of the tracks that will be moved underground falls between the railway crossing at Daniel del Olmo González Street in the south, and the VA-100 highway in the north.

With this solution Adif is also trying to minimize the impact of this construction on normal use of the railway and facilitate the later underground passage of all four tracks (two international-gauge, two Iberian-gauge) through El Pinar and the continuation of the latter toward the Variante Este de Mercancias (Eastern Freight Bypass).

Third section (El Pinar - Valladolid Campo Grande station)

From m.p. 243/000 a double roadbed will be constructed that will continue through the newly-built underpass before the Ronda Este (VA-30).

The new track will also be on the left (Valladolid side) of the present double Madrid-Hendaye track until it passes the Arco de Ladrillo. Afterward, it separates into two international-gauge tracks that will use platforms 1 and 2 of the Valladolid Campo Grande station, ending at the dual gauge converter that will be located at the station exit, near the San Isidro Street underpass.

MODIFICATIONS IN THE VALLADOLID CAMPO GRANDE STATION

As part of the project to build the high-speed Madrid -Segovia-Valladolid line, Adif is also remodeling and adapting the Valladolid-Campo Grande station (tracks and platforms) for its use with both track gauges: international and Iberian.

The remodeling affects existing railway installations between mileage point (m.p.) 247/700, after the La Esperanza level crossing, and m.p. 250/400, just before arriving at the south end of the bridge over the Esgueva River.

DUAL GAUGE CONVERTER

This new device is located between the Valladolid Campo Grande station and the Valladolid-Universidad stop, specifically, at mileage point 249/574 on the Madrid – Hendaye railway line, near the San Isidro street underpass.

The dual mechanism (for Talgo and CAF technology) will allow the connection of the high-speed Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid line with the Iberian-gauge track (Madrid-Hendaye line).

RAILWAY ARTERY NETWORK (RAN)

This consists of the construction of a rail bypass to the east of Valladolid with a double Iberian-gauge track. The bypass will be about 17 km long and will serve train traffic that does not need to enter the city. It will be used primarily for freight transport.

There are also plans to build a new freight station that will replace the current Argales terminal and will be located in a new railway complex.
