Giralda Rail

Auscultation of the railhead by induced currents

GIRALDA RAIL is a system that allows detecting the incipient appearance of cracks, fissures or surface defects in the head of the rail, in particular those produced by the wheel-rail interaction in the tread.

The auscultation system, based on the use of eddy or Foucalt currents, has been developed and verified from a consortium R + D + i project, in which the companies Amayuelas, Isend, the CARTIF Technological Center and Adif's R + D + i Area participated.

Highlighted paragraph

Giralda Rail enables immediate action on the defects found and at a lower cost than with other traditional techniques on the market that detect cracks in a more advanced state, normally involving drastic action such as rail replacement.

Product versions

With the same auscultation method, the Giralda Rail product is offered in two versions:

Self-supporting model called PORTOS,

Manual towing vehicle in which the monitoring equipment is installed.

ARGONAUTA onboard model

Allows inspections to be carried out at a higher speed by installing the monitoring equipment on board a track vehicle.

PORTOS equipment

It is a mobile equipment, easily transportable and managed by a single operator. Equipped with two units for generating and detecting eddy currents, it has the FOCARAIL software for a detailed analysis of the state of the rail, the identification and assessment of defects and their location on the track

With the two generation equipment units, defects in the
heads of both lanes, right and left, are detected simultaneously.

The performance spectrum of the probes covers the entire wheel-rail interaction surface.

Other characteristics of the PORTOS equipment:

  • Average speed of auscultation:3 km/h
  • Automatic data capture and storage of all information collected during the auscultation process.
  • Possibility of adaptation to any type of track and rail.
  • It has a fault location system, which allows a correct georeferencing of the same and their kilometric location.

Equipment on a track vehicle - ARGONAUTA

Its main characteristic is the speed with which the inspections can be carried out (80 km / h or higher) when loaded on a track vehicle, draisine or similar.

ARGONAUTA comes equipped with two equipment units for the generation and detection of induced currents, one for each rail. It has the same FOCARAIL software developed for the PORTOS equipment, for the detailed analysis of the rail on its active side, the identification and assessment of defects and georeferencing.

Other characteristics of the ARGONAUTA equipment:

  • Real-time analysis of the state of the track.

  • On-board equipment to control the positioning of the probes in the horizontal and vertical axis, which allows inspections to be carried out at high speeds, since there is no contact between the probe and the rail, avoiding possible interference with the infrastructure.

  • Automatic capture of georeferenced data and storage of all information collected during the auscultation process.
