Sustainability and Environment

Adif and Adif-High Speed carry out the construction, maintenance and operation of railway infrastructures. These activities may generate different kinds of waste, which are subject to the obligations described in the current applicable regulations.

Regarding these obligations, and based on the Entrusted Management Agreement, Adif's and Adif-High Speed's Environment Office is in charge of the following actions:

• The Environment Office coordinates, in a centralized manner, most issues related to hazardous waste management (except for hazardous waste whose composition, volume or location make it impossible to do so). In order to do this, it organizes biannual removals from the Hazardous Waste Storage Facilities (WSF) that request it. Likewise, and upon request from the areas of activity, the Environment Office manages additional removals, as well as the removal of hazardous waste produced outside a WSF and that, due tue location and/or handling reasons, cannot be transferred to such a facility.

• The Environment Office processes documentation related to hazardous waste management before the pertinent public agencies.

• It is responsible for the legalization and maintenance before the Autonomous Communities of waste producing facilities, both WSFs and other faclities that the areas of activity may request.

• The Environment Office keeps centralized information files in relation to the production and management of hazardous waste, and prepares management reports that collect data related to centrally managed removals, as well as statistical information about the progress of hazardous waste management. It prepares waste management indicators for Adif and Adif-High Speed.

• The Environment Office develops, in collaboration with the operational areas that coordinate production activities, the internal rules that regulate actions in relation to waste management and production. It is also a body for inquiry and counsel on these issues, as well as a nexus between Adif and/or Adif-High Speed, and the appropriate authorities of the autonomous communities and the central government.

All actions in terms of waste management are based on a global management approach, from production –as a result of the use of raw materials or process management– to final management control, so that it contributes to closing the cycle within a circular economy context.
