Fight Against Climate Change
Adif's plan to combat climate change for the 2018-2030 period is a strategic initiative that seeks to increase Adif's contribution to solving one of the most important and urgent environmental problems due to the impact it generates and due to its global scale.
The Plan establishes goals for 2020, 2025 and 2030 in the field of mitigation , in terms of increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as in the field of adaptation , with the aim of improving the resilience of railway infrastructures, as well as in terms of culture and awareness.
With this Plan, Adif aligns itself with existing policies and strategies at the international level, contributing to the objectives of the Paris Agreement and with SDG No. 13 "Climate Action", as well as at a European and national level.
Information on performance in the fight against climate change is collected both in Adif´s Management reports and Environmental Reports.
2050, the year of climate neutrality: Adif has signed the 2019 Climate Responsibility Commitment of the International Union of Railways (UIC, its acronym in French) which aims to align the position of the sector with the new challenges in the fight against climate change, being more ambitious by setting the goal of being carbon neutral by 2050.
Adif is attached to this platform that resulted from the Paris Agreement with the aim of encouraging society, companies, administrations and organizations to act urgently in the face of the climate crisis, reducing their emissions to achieve the 1.5ºC objective relative to pre-industrial levels and carbon neutrality by 2050.
In addition, Adif participates in the Forética Climate Change Cluster , a leading business platform in Spain that serves as a meeting point for exchanging experiences and good practices, as well as learning about the latest initiatives and regulations in the field of climate change, with the purpose of promoting and increasing the climate commitment of companies.
In this context, the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) convened a financial assistance program for energy efficiency actions in the railway sector, the purpose of which was to encourage and promote actions in the sector that reduce carbon dioxide emissions through energy saving and efficiency projects, thus contributing to the objectives of reducing final energy consumption established by Directive 2012/27/EU.
