Transformation of Atocha
The through station will connect to the high-speed network and allow two stops in Madrid: Atocha and Chamartín
Remodeling of the historic canopy
The renovation of the historic Madrid-Puerta de Atocha Almudena Grandes station canopy has been underway since early 2023. This project will expand and modernize the facilities, boosting their efficiency and capacity and ensuring they continue to meet the challenges of rail passenger transport liberalization. The station will continue to be a strategic hub for the Spanish rail network and its urban environment due to its size, its location in the heart of the capital, and its capacity to generate social, economic, and cultural activity in the city.
The refurbishment of the historic canopy will create more space for passengers, making it easier for them to move around the station, and new shopping areas will be created. Functional elements will also be introduced (access and evacuation concourses, vertical communication hubs) and a floor structure will be built on all floors of the towers, as well as a new terrace, attached to the north wing and connecting the side wings. In addition, the Tropical Garden will be remodeled and all the woodwork will be replaced, both on the interior and exterior facades. Finally, the two side squares (Plaza del Embarcadero and Patio de Méndez Álvaro) will be refurbished to adapt them to the configuration of the historic canopy, and new spaces will be created.
