Environment and Sustainability

Adif has helped develop the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy, Spain Circular 2030, prepared by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and has contributed with various initiatives in both the First Action Plan 2021-2023 and the Second Action Plan 2024-2026 of this Strategy.

Adif has contributed to the 2024-2026 2nd Circular Economy Action Plan with the following initiatives:
- "Ecomilla" project: a commitment to sustainable mobility in urban environments whose objective is to facilitate the traveler's door-to-door journey (from the point of origin to the railway station and from there to the destination point) by using an efficient means of transport that generates zero or very low emissions.
- Sustainability certification for station projects, considering the design, construction, and operation stages.
- Effective management of surplus construction waste (excavated natural material and topsoil) based on the waste hierarchy principle.
- Assessment of non-hazardous construction and demolition waste (CDW), promoting the prevention of its generation, encouraging preparation for reuse and recovery, and strengthening recycling.
- Review of the Adif and Adif AV waste management model, seeking to centralize and unify the management of historical, hazardous, and special waste.
- Promotion of the use of sustainable materials and management techniques in railway stations (use of local, recycled, recyclable materials, etc.)
- Regeneration/reuse of track equipment such as turnouts, expansion devices and rerailing devices.
