Adif and Adif High Speed energy self-consumption plan

Towards a more sustainable, safe, connected and smart model

The Energy Self-Consumption Plan includes the installation of photovoltaic plants on Adif and Adif AV land and the use of station roofs and canopies to deploy photovoltaic installations.

Currently, the construction of a 4 MW photovoltaic plant is underway on Adif AV land. In addition, 46 photovoltaic plants are being installed on the roofs of the buildings and canopies of some of our stations, which will receive funding through the “Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Funded by the European Union - NextGenerationEU” through the Autonomous programs promoted by Royal Decree 477/2021, of June 29, approving the direct granting of aid to the autonomous communities and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla to execute various incentive programs linked to self-consumption and storage, with renewable energy sources.
In figures:
12 MW
In total, with the planned actions, the installed capacity will be 12 MW
17 GWh/year
The energy generated is estimated to be 17 GWh/year
47 photovoltaic installations
The Plan currently includes 46 installations, in addition to the 4 MW photovoltaic plant in Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real)
More than 12 M €
More than 12 million euros are expected to be allocated to this

4 MW photovoltaic plant

Adif AV is making progress on the procedures to install a photovoltaic solar plant next to the Electrical Substation near the train station, in the municipality of Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real).

Adif AV has already commissioned the consulting and technical assistance services to carry out the administrative procedures to obtain the environmental resolution and the administrative authorization for the construction of the plant, as well as the drafting of the construction project. Likewise, the preliminary project and environmental impact study have already been submitted to process the application for prior administrative authorization.
Title
  • Self-consumption mode with surpluses.
  • An estimated investment of 3 million euros.
  • With a total of 4 MW of installed power.
  • It will occupy an area of approximately 56,000 m2.
  • The net annual energy generated will be greater than 6 GWh.
  • It will avoid the annual emission of 625 tCO2, considering the electricity mix on the Iberian Peninsular.
  • Surpluses discharged into the distribution network will be passed on to other Adif AV consumption points, following an agreement with the commercialization company, "Virtual Self-Consumption".

Consumption mode without surpluses

Adif AV has awarded the contract for drafting the construction project, the administrative permitting procedures, the execution of the works, and the operation and maintenance of another 25 solar installations on roofs, canopies and land. This action has European funding through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
Title
  • An investment of 1.8 million euros.
  • They will be operational this year.
  • They have a total power of more than 1.5 MW.
  • On average, 13% of the total energy consumed in the facilities where the panels will be located will be covered.
  • The net annual energy generated will be close to 2.7 GWh.
  • The average use of photovoltaic energy generated for self-consumption will be greater than 99%.
  • It will avoid the annual emission of 265 tCO2, considering the electricity mix on the Iberian Peninsular.

Consumption mode with surpluses

Adif AV has awarded the contract for drafting the construction project, the administrative permitting procedures, the execution of the works, and the operation and maintenance of another 25 solar installations on roofs, canopies and land. This action has European funding through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
Title
  • Investment of approximately 6.2 million euros.
  • These facilities will add up to a total installed capacity of 6.1 MW.
  • On average, 27% of the total energy consumed in the facilities where the panels will be located will be covered.
  • The annual net energy generated is estimated to be 8.5 GWh.
  • The average use of photovoltaic energy generated for self-consumption will reach 86%.
  • It will avoid the annual emission of 850 tCO2, considering the electricity mix on the Iberian Peninsular.

Climate change strategy

This project joins those we already have underway in the Energy Efficiency area, such as Electric Charging Points (railway stations), the replacement of diesel boilers with others using renewable technologies (aerothermal/geothermal/biomass), and the Railway Smart Grid smart energy management network.
This Plan and its actions are included in the Adif and Adif AV strategy for decarbonisation and the use of renewable energies, framed within its Climate Change Action Plan 2018-2030 and in its Strategic Plan to 2030.

These photovoltaic self-consumption actions are aligned with the objectives of the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and, in particular, within Components 1, 2 and 7 of the transversal Ecological Transition area. They also contribute to the measures and objectives set out in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan and in new Law 7/2021 on Climate Change and Energy Transition.
By launching these types of initiatives, the contribution of entities to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is increased, particularly SDG 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy” and SDG 13 “Climate Action”.
