Asset recovery with social criteria

Social Sustainability

Adif is aware of the relevant impact that its activity has on the communities in which it operates and in the country as a whole.

Some disused real-estate assets are being reused in social or business projects, in collaboration with institutions, non-profit organizations or companies. By being at the service of the economic and social development of the territories where they are located, these assets once again generate value and contribute to sustainable development and social well-being.

  • Assets for Development Program: This program aims to promote the recovery of disused real- estate assets so that they can be reused in social or business projects, in collaboration with public authorities, institutions, non-profit organizations and companies. This will generate economic activity, especially in rural settings.

  • Leases with social criteria. Adif leases various assets to non-profit entities (public administrations, associations, and foundations) at advantageous prices, provided that the purpose of the lease is to use them for social, cultural, welfare, tourism, educational, or community activities.

  • Greenways Program. Adif promotes the creation of Greenways, restoring old, disused railway lines so they can be converted into routes of social interest. These routes act as sustainable axes, promoting contact with and respect for nature in rural areas of remarkable scenic beauty and environmental value. They also promote active and sustainable tourism, rural development, and improve connections between nearby rural areas. Adif's commitment to Greenways has significantly boosted their development.

  • Transfer of railway elements for museum use. Adif collaborates with the Spanish Railway Foundation, the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españole, by donating railway material that is not in use.  This collaboration makes it possible to recover and showcase these elements as part of the historical railway heritage, integrating them into exhibition and museum spaces.
